Process Sound Cycle I
In memory of Kate Radford (2023–2024)
Process Sound began as a listening practice using instruments and recording equipment that once belonged to Kate Radford.
Returning to the looper after several years, I began recording small improvisations with bamboo flutes, kora, voice and found objects.
The recordings form a process archive rather than a finished album.
Some appear during rehearsal, travel, physical work or everyday moments.

Foot Pedal Looper Study
This is my very first recording in this project, dedicated to Kate Radford. I recently revisited the Boss RC-30 two-pedal looper after five years. Quickly remembered the basics and made a short recording. [...]
Is this a finished piece of music? Certainly not! It’s more of an exploration into looping and the capabilities of the Boss RC-30.

Time for Loop Station: Exploring the Boss RC-505
I spent a week exploring the RC-505 loop station. After studying tutorials and the manual, things finally clicked on November 3, 2023.
[...]
I used five loop tracks with live-processed vocals and a mix of effects. This setup let me experiment with electronic instruments, quirky beatboxing, and choir-like textures. One beat heard in the background was created directly on the console.
This is not a finished composition—just an exploration of what the Boss RC-505 can do.

Loop Station Exploration
This time the exploration takes a video form — a natural progression of the process.
I recorded looped textures with the Travel Kora and performed with kora and birbyne in live layering. This remains an open exploration in sound and presence.
[...]
Working with video shifts my attention toward the relationship between sound, image and concentration. The recording captures a moment in process — shaped by the acoustics of the space and the immediacy of listening.
What remains central is the act of listening and responding in real time.

"Echoes of Air" - Instant composition
Composing for a short film
Invited to create music for a short film, I approached the process through improvisation with the Travel Kora, allowing the material to emerge intuitively.
[...]
A five-minute musical sketch unfolded first, later enriched by layers of birbyne, Bulgarian kaval and bamboo flute. The piece developed as a dialogue between instruments, listening and moment-to-moment response.

About the process
Voices
I began with a voice looper, creating a looping base for improvisation with kora, voice and bamboo flute. The material unfolded gradually through listening and response. [...]
The music emerged layer by layer, guided by attention to breath, timing and resonance. Each sound suggested the next, allowing the piece to take its own direction.

Memories...
Using a MIDI keyboard and looper connected to my computer, I entered a field of electronic looping and live layering, listening for textures and emerging patterns. [...]
This moment forms part of a wider ongoing exploration, where acoustic and electronic sounds meet in real time.

Evoke memories...
Returning to the loop created the previous day, I listened again and found new emotional resonance within the sound. A subtle texture emerged and guided the next layer. [...]
The recording captures a direct, unfiltered moment of making, shaped by proximity and the physical presence of the microphone in hand.

Ahead U turn
This recording marks the beginning of Process Sound, dedicated to Kate Radford. Returning to the looper after several years, I approached it as a space for listening and rediscovery. [...]
This is not a finished composition, but an open exploration of looping, listening and presence.

Dust Devil
Working with frame drum and looper, I layered bamboo flute and Lithuanian birbyne, allowing the textures to meet and evolve in real time. [...]
The Bulgarian kaval emerged as a leading voice, while beatbox and subtle electronic pulses entered as responses within the unfolding soundscape.

Working with kora and looper over a 7/4 pulse, I allowed the rhythm to settle until the loops began to form a foundation. Gradually, the presence of Kit Radford’s voice began to emerge within the sound. [...]
Drawn to the irregular 7/4 cycle, I explored how repetition could create a grounded yet shifting base. An old piano sample entered as a quiet layer of warmth.
At a certain moment, Kit Radford’s poem Coming of Age felt called into the piece. Her spoken words became part of the sonic landscape, carrying memory and presence.
This unfolded as a spontaneous tribute, shaped by listening and emotional resonance.
Journey...
Kate Radford was a multidisciplinary artist working across performance, installation and film.
Her work explored myth, philosophy, somatic practices and ritual.
