Experience an Epic of Gilgamesh performance in Chronicles – A Lamentation, blending storytelling with Greek and Albanian polyphonic songs.

“…as Rafal Habel, playing Gilgamesh , began his final speech in a slowly darkening room, the lights failed, flickering between brightness and blackout. Habel, ready and responsive, transformed the scene into a dialogue between himself and the faltering glow, a moment of theatrical purity.”

A Performance Rooted in Ancient Traditions

Chronicles – A Lamentation is an immersive Epic of Gilgamesh performance that blends storytelling with the rich musical traditions of northern Epiros. This region, spanning Greece and Albania, is known for its vibrant polyphonic songs and lamentations.

The ensemble spent two years researching this cultural heritage, uncovering a unique vocal tradition. Voices are divided into distinct roles—the Weaver, the Cutter, the Giver/Taker, and the Drone—each adding depth and drama to the performance.

Chronicles – A Lamentation

A Journey Through the Epic of Gilgamesh

The production draws from the ancient Epic of Gilgamesh, one of humanity’s oldest stories. This Sumerian legend tells the tale of Gilgamesh, a king who is part human and part god. His friendship with the wild Enkidu leads to battles with divine forces, but after Enkidu’s death, Gilgamesh embarks on a quest for immortality.

Through this journey, Chronicles – A Lamentation explores timeless themes of loss, grief, and the search for meaning.

Music and Theatrical Innovation in Chronicles - A Lamentation

Directed by Grzegorz Bral, the production seamlessly integrates music, poetry, and movement. The songs, arranged by the ensemble, draw inspiration from traditional Greek and Albanian polyphonic songs and laments.

The performers act out the poetry through song, embodying the epic’s characters. Roles like the Weaver and Taker represent the protagonist and antagonist, weaving a powerful narrative tapestry.

A Unique Blend of Tradition and Mythology

By combining the ancient story of Gilgamesh with the traditional music of Epiros, Chronicles – A Lamentation offers a profound exploration of humanity’s shared emotional journey. This performance transcends time, blending cultural heritage with universal themes to create an unforgettable experience.
