Chronicles – A Lamentation was developed at the Grotowski Centre in Wrocław, now the Grotowski Institute, and premiered in 2001. Directed by Grzegorz Bral, the production drew on the Epic of Gilgamesh and the polyphonic laments of Epirus, on the border of Greece and Albania. Voice, movement and text came together in an exploration of friendship, grief and the search for immortality.
Rafał Habel performed Gilgamesh as the production toured extensively around the world. Alongside his acting and ensemble singing, he designed the lighting and co-designed the set, contributing to both the performance and its visual world.
“…as Rafal Habel, playing Gilgamesh , began his final speech in a slowly darkening room, the lights failed, flickering between brightness and blackout. Habel, ready and responsive, transformed the scene into a dialogue between himself and the faltering glow, a moment of theatrical purity.”
