"Walking" – A Theatrical Exploration of Thought and Madness

“If we compare the beauty of this country with the evil of this state, we will end up in suicide.”
— Thomas Bernhard

“Walking” by Thomas Bernhard is a linguistically and stylistically masterful narrative, rich in absurdity, darkness, and humor. As the narrator and Oehler walk, they engage in deep discussions about the nature of thought, logic, and existence itself. They examine the interaction between the “conditions and situations” of the world and the relationship between walking and thinking, movement and stillness.

The central scene of the play takes place in Rustensacher’s shop, an episode obsessively described by Bernhard, where the protagonist, Karrer, reaches a critical point in his existence. His thoughts—his metaphorical “walking”—lead him to a state from which there may be no return. The clothing store transforms into a suffocating space for thought and a destructive force for Karrer himself.

Poster creation:

“Walking” is a profound reflection on the inability to think freely. The characters do not move forward; instead, they circle back to the same ideas through repetition and variation, creating new mental spaces.

  • Can thought become an oppressive reality?
  • Is walking merely an illusion of progress?
  • Is madness an extreme form of intellectualism?
  • Does the intellectual ultimately turn against themselves, or is madness an act of rebellion against reality?

The Transatlantic Group explores the field of complementary arts, focusing on the fusion of artistic forms. “Walking”shifts the focus from dialogue and narrative structure to musical composition and distortion. Inspired by open performances, the play challenges conventional storytelling in favor of a sensory musical experience. It unfolds like an instantaneous choral score, composed of shifting rhythms, irregular pauses, and the unpredictable interactions of the actors, as they navigate through both real and imagined landscapes.
