Character: Leonid Gayev / Chorus
Co-created, premiered, and toured internationally.

Portraits of the Cherry Orchard is a theatrical performance that offers a musical and poetic interpretation of Anton Chekhov’s timeless drama, The Cherry Orchard. With original compositions by Guy Pearson and Maciej Rychły, the production reimagines Chekhov’s work through a rich blend of music, poetry, and physical expression. It delves deeply into themes of nostalgia, loss, and the yearning for a paradise lost—symbolized by the Cherry Orchard itself. This iconic setting, therefore, becomes a metaphor for the decline of cherished values, transformed into a mythic reflection of unreachable perfection.

Meanwhile, the performance invites audiences into a poignant exploration of memory and impermanence. The characters’ longing for their former lives evokes a deep sense of emotional truth, as their memories become dreamlike visions of an idealized past. As a result, each character is uniquely shaped through a series of improvisations by the actors, who use gesture, movement, and dance to bring out their inner worlds.

Music and Poetry: Elevating the Emotional Core of the Performance

In addition, a live musical score performed by Guy Pearson on piano enhances the emotional depth of the story. The music becomes a constant, expressive presence, intertwining with the narrative to heighten the atmosphere and connection between the characters.

Furthermore, the production draws inspiration from the lyrical works of renowned Russian poets Osip Mandelstam and Anna Akhmatova. Their poetry is seamlessly woven into the fabric of the performance, enriching the characters’ relationships and actions while adding layers of complexity to their emotional journeys.

Ultimately, Portraits of the Cherry Orchard is more than a retelling of Chekhov’s play. It is an immersive experience that combines theatre, music, and poetry to explore the fragile beauty of human connections, the ache of nostalgia, and the transformative power of art.
